Risk maps for carrying out work in electrical installations

Risk maps for carrying out work in electrical installationsThe electrical installation is subject to increased danger. During the operation of electrical installations, the impact of various negative factors on a person is possible. Therefore, in any power plant, maximum safety must be ensured for workers who perform maintenance on electrical installations.

One of the measures to improve safety when working in electrical installations is the introduction of risk maps. Consider what the risk maps are for carrying out work in electrical installations.

Risk maps are a set of documents that indicate harmful factors, risks that arise when performing certain work in electrical installations. In addition, the risk maps show the consequences of these factors, as well as ways to prevent these situations or actions in case of manifestation of these factors.

The management of the enterprise, in this case the energy supply company, when preparing risk maps, analyzes the production process, assesses possible risks and develops measures aimed at protecting against these negative factors.

Risk maps are written for every work that is carried out in electrical installations. Risk cards are an additional security measure when organizing work under a permit or order.

The work permit (order) indicates the necessary safety measures that must be taken for the safe execution of the work, and the work permit indicates the names of risk cards corresponding to the work performed. When accepting work according to the admission, the accepting person familiarizes the brigade with these risk maps, informing about the possible risks of dangerous situations, as well as about the measures for their prevention and actions in case of manifestation of certain factors.

Electrical safety in electrical installations

Here is an example of a circuit breaker repair risk map.

Possible risks, dangerous factors:

  • working with tools and devices,

  • electric shock from nearby energized electrical equipment,

  • the probability of an emergency: failure of equipment located near the workplace, ground fault, which is accompanied by the appearance of step voltage,

  • work at height.

Possible consequences of dangerous situations for people who perform work: receiving injuries and burns of varying degrees, death, risk of occupational disease.

Operation of electrical equipment

Safety measures aimed at preventing accidents include:

  • compliance with safety measures when performing work, instructions and rules for using certain tools and devices,

  • repair of the disconnector in an amount corresponding to the normative documents,

  • the use of the necessary personal protective equipment: helmet, special suit and shoes, tool with insulating handles, gloves, etc.,

  • knowledge and ability to act in the event of an emergency.

Risk maps can be periodically revised and supplemented with new risks and their corresponding consequences and safety measures. For example, while repairing a disconnector, one of the team members was stung by a wasp that flew out of the disconnector. In this case, the relevant risk, insect bite effects and precautions can be included in the risk graphs.

In addition, the risk maps show possible negative climatic factors — the possibility of getting heat stroke or hypothermia.
