Expert advice: UPS selection criteria

Nowadays, when electronics are ubiquitous, it is very important to protect ourselves from sudden and uncontrolled power outages that can paralyze our daily lives and their consequences in the form of damage to electronic equipment.

The most recommended way to ensure that sensitive devices are properly powered is to use an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

ALL UPS POWERLINE GREEN 33 / LITE / PRO series generate the highest output voltage

In case of loss or instability of the mains voltage, their task is to supply energy to the electrical consumers (using the energy stored in the batteries) for a certain time necessary for the safe, controlled completion of the processes being carried out, and often the quality of the voltage, fed to electrical consumers is often further enhanced. …

When choosing a UPS, you need to answer the question of which devices you want to protect, determine the power consumption of these devices and what is the required backup time.

A stand-alone UPS, as the simplest and cheapest solution, offers the lowest level of protection. In the mode of operation from the network, the mains voltage is supplied to the electrical receivers, which is turned on by the bypass system, the transition to the mode of operation from the battery is associated with an interruption of the power supply to the electrical receivers for a few milliseconds.

Uninterruptible power supplies in this topology often have a voltage waveform that is distorted compared to a sinusoidal waveform. In more modern solutions, the generated waveform is synchronized with the restored mains voltage.

An example of an uninterruptible power supply belonging to this group is the EVER ECO LCD UPS, in which, thanks to the LCD panel and the multifunction button, you can easily control its additional functions.

In the case of servers and computers processing strategic data and information, the use of a linear-interactive topology is strongly recommended.

Line-interactive UPSs have an additional output voltage regulator (automatic voltage regulation system). This way they have the ability to adjust the voltage without using battery power. Using internal functional systems, they bring the output voltage as close to the nominal as possible.

In addition, these power supplies have a shorter transition time to battery operation and back to mains voltage without interrupting the supply. In the majority of cases, power supplies operate for 3-5 minutes at rated load.

If longer operating times are required, this can be achieved with additional battery modules that can be connected, for example, to power supplies.

On the other hand, dedicated power supplies are used to ensure smooth and uninterrupted operation of central heating boilers, water jacket fireplaces or other home automation systems. An example of this is the UPS SPECLINE AVR 700 / SPECLINE AVR PRO 700.

AC power supplies work in a completely different way—they perform a double conversion of energy. The mains voltage supplied to the input of the UPS is rectified in the rectifier system and then transmitted to the inverter via the DC voltage bus, where it is converted into an alternating voltage with quality parameters, which during normal operation is used to protect the power supply electrical consumers and at the same time charges the batteries.

Changing the operating mode from mains to battery and vice versa is completely seamless. In case of overload or failure of the internal components of the UPS, the static bypass automatically connects the load to the mains via the bypass system. Power supplies of this type are used to power the most demanding receivers in terms of power quality.

Examples of this type of solution are UPS EVER POWERLINE GREEN 33 LITE and UPS EVER POWERLINE GREEN 33 PRO.

It is also important that the energy supplied by the UPS during normal (mains) operation to electricity consumers is of a higher quality than the power of the mains, therefore uninterruptible power supply systems improve the operating conditions of powered devices and further reducing their negative impact on the electrical network.
