How to wire outdoors

There are serious enough reasons for withdrawing electrical wiring and using electrical appliances and equipment outdoors. First—and most importantly—it's much safer to garden with a power tool plugged into a convenient and properly protected outlet than with long, if not composite, extension cords coming from outlets somewhere in the house— this practice often causes accidents.

The garage and workshop also become safer and more efficient if they are equipped with good lighting and their own power tool wiring.

Outdoor electrical safety

The importance of ensuring absolutenessElectrical safety outdoor. Moisture and direct contact of the user with the ground can lead to an accident with a fatal outcome if you do not follow certain rules.

  • Install only electrical appliances and equipment intended for outdoor use.
  • Use only wires recommended by the Electrical Code and check their condition regularly.
  • Protect all circuits outside of the RCD as they provide an almost instantaneous response to short circuit on the ground.
  • Always turn off power before servicing electrical equipment and tools, as well as tank or pool lights and pumps.
  • Wear rubber-soled shoes when working with mains-powered garden tools.
  • Use a double-insulated power tool.

Entrance lamp installation

Front door or back entry lighting greets your guests and helps them find your home. It also allows you to see those who have not given notice of your arrival before you open the door for them.

Use only lighting fixtures specifically designed for the outdoor application. The electrical equipment must be waterproof and the lamp must be protected with a rubber seal around the electrical connections. If possible, place the light fixture so that it can be a suitable wire was laid through the wall or ceiling of the porch or porch inside the fixture. But if you still need to lead an ordinary wire outside the wall, then it should be put in a plastic conduit.

Cable connection

The entry light fixture is installed in the same way as adding a new lamp to the room. Take the power from the nearest ceiling socket and connect it to a 5A 4-terminal junction box bolted to the platform between the two ceiling joists.

From the junction box, run a wire with two insulated and one «Earth» wires to the switch near the door and the same wire to a lamp. Using a stone drill, drill a hole in the wall where you plan to install a lamp.Cement a small section into the hole of plastic tubing with rubber seals at the ends. Run a wire through the conduit and connect to the light fixture according to the manufacturer's instructions. Then, with the voltage off, connect a new connect the input light to the ceiling socket.

Internal and external contacts

Sockets can be installed outdoors, provided a weatherproof version is built in, although due to the specifics of this job it is better to leave it for qualified electrician… But you can install the socket yourself in a weatherproof garage, workshop or greenhouse that is part of the building, using a branch of the ring chain. Install the outlet high enough to not be hit by a cart or obstructed by a garden tool.

RCD protection

This protection can be provided in various ways. The best is perhaps to put a shield with its own built-in RCD or install a separate RCD next to it with a fuse to protect the ring circuit, including a garden tool branch.

Alternatively, you can install a socket with a built-in RCD. RCDs built into adapters or plugs provide some protection but do not meet the requirements of the Electrical Works Regulations in terms of their protection contacts.
